Power and substations automation

IEC 61850 substation automation, SCADA with live single line diagrams and telemetry to the control centre, for distribution and plant substations.

How substation automation is layered

Switchgear and transformers at process level, protection relays and bay controllers at bay level, and SCADA, HMI and the control centre gateway at station level, all tied together by an IEC 61850 station bus. Follow the numbers from the top: the control centre sees only what the gateway reports, the operators work at station level, and every measurement starts at the primary equipment at the bottom.

Read it top to bottom: the control centre only talks to the gateway, operators work at station level, every bay has its own panel, and each panel is wired to the equipment directly below it.

What happens when a feeder trips

  1. 1Fault on feeder F3The CT sees the overcurrent and the protection relay trips the breaker in about 40 ms, over hardwiring.
  2. 2Other bays interlockThe relay publishes a GOOSE message so the other bays interlock, and reports the trip over MMS with a 1 ms time stamp from the GPS clock.
  3. 3Operator sees itThe operator HMI turns F3 red on the single line diagram, raises the alarm and logs the sequence of events.
  4. 4Control centre informedThe gateway forwards the trip and the feeder current to the DISCOM / SLDC control centre over IEC 104.
  5. 5Restored and recordedAfter the fault is cleared the operator closes the breaker from the HMI. Every action is in the audit log and the outage duration goes into the report.

Common questions

Which voltage levels do you work at?

Distribution and plant substations, including those inside water supply schemes and process plants. Send us the single line diagram and we will size the scope.

Can the substation report to a utility control centre or SLDC?

Yes, through a gateway over IEC 60870-5-104 or 101.

Planning a plant, terminal, WTP or substation?

Tell us what you are planning, even if the details are still rough. We reply with a technical approach and an offer.
